It should come as no surprise that President Donald Trump came under fire by his critics for remarks he made during his commencement speech at West Point over the weekend.

According to Newsweek, at some point during his speech, Trump began talking about real estate developer William Levitt, dialing in on the developer's divorce before saying his new wife is a "trophy wife."

His haters on social media jumped on the moment and did their best to throw sharp arrows his way.

Many of his critics called his West Point commencement speech a "disaster," with his supporters providing the opposite opinion.

What happened?

Newsweek provided a recap of what happened during that part of the president's speech.

The president was referring to Levitt, best known for mass-produced homes in suburbs throughout the country. These communities became known as "Levittowns."

Trump told West Point graduates that Levitt, who he described as a "great, great real estate man," eventually lost his "momentum." That's when he got a "trophy wife," according to the president.

His next remarks are what drew the most raised eyebrows, as he indicated that "trophy wives" usually don't "work out to well."

"That doesn't work out to well, I must tell you," Trump told the graduates. "There's a lot of trophy wives—doesn't work out. But it made them happy for a little while at least."

The president gave the commencement speech to roughly 1,000 graduates of the prestigious military academy.

Other Trump haters took shots at the president for sporting his signature red "MAGA" hat at the graduation.

Social media reacts

His supporters praised him for his speech at West Point, holding nothing back in sharing their excitement over the moment.

"Only if he rode in on a bald eagle, holding a cheeseburger in one hand and the Constitution in the other. Trump at West Point is peak stars and stripes," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Best President of my 73 yrs. I wish my husband had lived to see him re-elected."

No matter what President Trump does or says, he'll always have his critics, and the best part is that he doesn't lose a wink of sleep as a result.
