Poll suggests Chuck Schumer would lose to AOC in Democratic primary race

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has little to fear from Republicans, most recently winning reelection in 2022 with almost 57% of the vote.

However, a new poll suggests that the longtime New York Democrat is in danger of being replaced by someone within his own party.

Poll has Schumer losing Democratic primary race to AOC

According to the New York Post, that survey was carried out between May 15 and May 18 by the Honan Strategy Group on behalf of the Jewish Voters Action Network.

It found that Schumer is trailing New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among likely Democratic primary voters.

Whereas 54% of respondents are ready to back Ocasio-Cortez, just 33% say they would cast a vote for Schumer while an additional 12% are undecided.

The incumbent senator only does marginally better among Jewish Democratic voters, winning 38% to Ocasio-Cortez's 45%. Meanwhile, 17% of Jewish Democrats are undecided.

Schumer is "bleeding support" from members of the Jewish community

Maury Litwack is cofounder of Jewish Voters Action Network, and he called the poll results "a massive wake-up call for Schumer. Litwack noted to the Post that Schumer is "not only bleeding support in the Democratic Party overall but also in the Jewish community."

Litwack suggested that part of Schumer's problem stems from the fact that he failed to pass the Antisemitism Awareness Act when his party controlled the Senate last year.

What's more, Litwack complained that the Senate minority leader told Columbia University to ignore accusations that the college tolerated antisemitism on its campus.

"The leading Jewish elected official in the nation did not step up in a moment of rising antisemitism — and the poll reflects that," Litwack said.

April poll found that Schumer approval rating has fallen "dramatically"

This is not the first time that Schumer has gotten bad polling news in recent weeks, as Fox News reported that a survey carried out last month also had discouraging results.

Conducted between April 14 and April 15 by Siena College, it showed that 49% of New York state voters have an unfavorable view of the longtime lawmaker compared with just 39% who regard him favorably.

"While he continues to be viewed unfavorably by more than two-thirds of Republicans and a majority of independents, Schumer saw his standing with Democrats, particularly liberals, fall dramatically," Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg was quoted as saying.

"Democrats view Schumer favorably 52-38%, down from 68-23%, and he’s still viewed favorably by a plurality of liberals, 47-41%, but that’s down from 68-21%," Greenberg added.
