Florida Democratic congresswoman accused of stealing $5 million in federal funds
This past week saw the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) call for an investigation of Florida Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
Cherfilus-McCormick is facing multiple allegations, including that she stole millions of dollars in federal funds.
Tax dollars were allegedly diverted from nonprofit telemedicine group
According to the Daily Caller, the Florida Democratic lawmaker is accused of illegally diverting $5 million which was allocated in Congress’ 2023 budget.
While the money was earmarked for a telemedicine nonprofit group known as the Figgers Foundation, the OCC found evidence that it instead ended up in the hands of a for-profit company.
Other OCC concerns related to campaign finance laws, as Cherfilus-McCormick's campaign may have "accepted and failed to report in-kind contributions that may have exceeded applicable limits."
It also may have "misreported the source of a campaign contribution or accepted a campaign contribution made by one person in the name of another."
Congresswoman said to have "dispensed special favors or privileges to friends"
Another example of potential corruption involved allegations that the legislator "may have dispensed special favors or privileges to friends in connection with her congressional office’s requests for community project funding."
What's more, there is an accusation that Cherfilus-McCormick's office "made payments to an entity in violation of House committee rules and standards of conduct."

This is not the only time that Cherfilus-McCormick has faced trouble from the OCC, as in 2023 the body raised earlier campaign finance allegations stemming from her 2022 special election.
Those allegations along with the more recent claims against Cherfilus-McCormick will be reviewed by members of the House Ethics Committee.
Cherfilus-McCormick is "committed to cooperating" with investigators
The Daily Caller noted that for her part, Cherfilus-McCormick put out a statement, saying, "The Committee on Ethics has not yet concluded its review of the allegations, and no decision has been made at this time."
"As outlined in the Committee’s public statement, the referral for further review does not imply that any violation has occurred," she continued.
Cherfilus-McCormick pledged that she will "fully respect the process" and is "committed to cooperating with the Committee as it works to bring this inquiry to a close."
