President Donald Trump is no stranger to profanity, occasionally using off-color words in his social media posts and campaign speeches.

However, the president may have been blindsided this week to hear Vice President J.D. Vance employ some of the same language.

Think tank founder jokes about Vance's past

According to the Daily Mail, Vance's comment came while speaking at a black-tie event hosted by the conservative think tank American Compass.

At one point during the proceedings, American Compass founder Oren Cass recalled how Vance once wrote articles for National Review, a publication which has sometimes been hostile towards Trump.

"I am thrilled to have this opportunity to talk with you and so grateful that the work you’re doing and, in a sense, so in awe of it because there are politicians out there who are, they’ve just been politicians," Cass began.

"But you are someone who was an intellectual first. Some people don’t like the word "intellectual." But I mean it in the good sense of the term," he continued.

Vance: "What an an a----- this guy is"

"You were writing for National Review," Cass pointed out. "You were at the bar late at night arguing about and helping shape these ideas that you are now."

Vance responded with laughter, joking, "I come here for free and you insult me. And you call me an intellectual, remind me that I wrote for National Review. What an a----e this guy is!"

The Daily Mail reported that audience members reacted to Vance's remark with applause, prompting Cass to state, "That’s fair. I will admit that I, too, wrote for National Review."

Later in the evening, Vance explained how he realized that America was "actually governed by complete morons and we didn't even realize it until the Trump administration started getting under the hood of our government."

Think tank praises Vance for supporting "American families and workers"

The Daily Mail noted how American Compass communications director Theresa Braid later provided a statement praising Vance.

"No figure in American politics has more effectively advocated for American families and workers than Vice President J.D. Vance," Braid asserted.

"Vice President Vance has led the charge to speak for the Americans that our elites have forgotten," the think tank spokeswoman continued.

Braid then went on to say that "[i]t is an honor to have him join our celebration of the movement that he has helped build."
