Trump moves to defund NPR and PBS

President Donald Trump is moving to officially strip both National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) of over $1 billion in public funding.

The Daily Mail reports that Trump made the move this past week.

This is not an old news story. You may remember that Trump recently signed an executive order terminating funding for NPR and PBS. Now, Trump is trying to get Congress to back him up.

Background

It was a little over a month ago that Trump signed an executive order that terminated funding for NPR and PBS.

At the time, the White House released a fact sheet, stating, "NPR and PBS have fueled partisanship and left-wing propaganda with taxpayer dollars, which is highly inappropriate and an improper use of taxpayers’ money, as President Trump has stated."

The White House also argued, "Unlike in 1967, when CPB was established, today the media landscape is filled with abundant, diverse, and innovative news options, making government funding of news media outdated, unnecessary, and corrosive to journalistic independence."

Accordingly, Trump ordered the defunding of both NPR and PBS, and the president gave the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) a deadline of June 30, 2025, to carry out his order.

Now, Trump is looking to get Congress to back him up.

The latest

The Daily Mail reports that the Trump White House recently sent a "rescissions request" to Congress, asking House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to do his part to get it approved.

Per the outlet:

Tuesday night House Speaker Mike Johnson said that he had officially received the rescissions request from the White House to extinguish a total of $9.4 billion in funding from NPR, PBS, the State Department, and the United States Agency for International Development, the latter of which the administration has disassembled.

For NPR and PBS, the amount will specifically be $1.1 billion.

Johnson is expected to hold a vote on the measure this upcoming week.

He put out a statement, saying:

Now that this wasteful spending by the federal government has been identified by DOGE, quantified by the Administration, and sent to Congress, House Republicans will fulfill our mandate and continue codifying into law a more efficient federal government. This is exactly what the American people deserve.
