Trump and South Korea's new liberal president come to terms on tariff situation
President Donald Trump is still taking flak over his bold tariff push, but he's also receiving plenty of praise for the progress he's made so far.
According to Fox Business, his latest tariff success story involves South Korea and the country's new president, Lee Jae-myung, who agreed to make a deal regarding Trump's tariffs that would be good for both countries.
The news is significant for many reasons, including the fact that President Jae-myung is a die-hard liberal and wasn't expected to work with Trump so soon on such a contested issue.
Lee Jae-myung replaced conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and ultimatley kicked out of the presidency over his declaration of martial law last year.
What's happening?
The South Korean president's office released a statement on the tentative tariff deal struck with Trump.
"The two presidents agreed to make an effort to reach a satisfactory agreement on tariff consultations as soon as possible that both countries can be satisfied with," Lee's office said in a statement, adding that the negotiations are encouraged to "yield tangible results."

Fox Business noted
The future of South Korea's export-oriented economy may be contingent on the type of deal Lee can reach with Trump, as the country's key sectors are heavily exposed to global trade.
In addition to imposing tariffs, Trump has pressured South Korea to pay more for the more than 28,000 U.S. troops stationed in the country.
While the deal looks good on paper, White House allies have expressed concerned over the new South Korean president's approach to China, which they say is more "conciliatory," and could lead to a greater Chinese threat in the Indo-Pacific region.
Regardless, President Trump invited the new president to attend a U.S. summit, with the potential to meet at the G-7 summit in Canada next month.
Common interests
Lee and Trump also reportedly shared similar assassination attempt stories during their first phone call.
Fox Business noted:
Lee underwent surgery after he was stabbed in the neck by a man in January of last year, while Trump was wounded in the ear when a man shot at him during a campaign rally in July.
The two also share a passion for golf, which was a subject of their phone call.
Only time will tell if the two leaders can find a way to continue to work together.
