Judge holds Florida AG in contempt of court

A left-wing judge just held the attorney general of Florida in contempt of court.

CBS News reports that U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen Williams did so on Tuesday, after Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier (R) did not adhere to an injunction that she had issued.

The injunction had to do with a hot-button issue, namely, immigration law.

Here's what happened:

This all has to do with immigration laws signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, which are in support of President Donald Trump's immigration agenda.

NBC News explains:

Williams has been presiding over a case challenging immigration laws signed this year by Gov. Ron DeSantis that make it a misdemeanor for anybody in the country illegally to enter or re-enter the state. She issued a restraining order in April barring enforcement, and Uthmeier sent out a notice to state agencies informing them of the order, adding that he disagreed with it and intended to appeal.

Uthmeier, however, followed up with a second message suggesting that law enforcement did not have to follow Williams' order.

He wrote:

Judge Williams ordered my office to notify you of the evolving scope of her order, and I did so. But I cannot prevent you from enforcing [the challenged laws], where there remains no judicial order that properly restrains you from doing so. As set forth in the brief my office filed today, it is my view that no lawful, legitimate order currently impedes your agencies from continuing to enforce Florida’s new illegal entry and reentry laws.

Suffice it to say that Williams did not take too kindly to this.

"If this is what it costs, then..."

Recently, a hearing was held in which Williams essentially asked Uthmeier to justify what he had done. There, he argued that he did not violate her order because he had not enforced DeSantis's new laws and because he informed state law enforcement agencies of Williams' order.

Williams, however, found this to be an unconvincing argument. She called attention to interviews that he had done in which he said such things as he is "not going to bow down" to Williams.

Accordingly, Williams decided to hold Uthmeier in civil contempt of court.

Uthmeier, for his part, is unfazed.

He released a statement on the situation, saying, "If being held in contempt is what it costs to defend the rule of law and stand firmly behind President Trump's agenda on illegal immigration, so be it."
