Trump demands Senate GOP strip out Biden's green energy tax credits from spending bill

President Donald Trump has a lot of irons in the fire. While he's taking care of business in Iran, he's also attempting to erase part of his predecessor's "green energy" legacy.

According to the Daily Caller, in a Truth Social post "slamming intermittent renewable energy and excoriating the Senate’s proposal for failing to completely slash the Biden-era green energy tax credits," the president made it clear that he wants the tax credits wiped out.

The call to have the tax credits nixed does create a potential Senate problem for Trump's "big, beautiful" spending bill.

The fight between conservative and moderate Senate Republicans could be ramped up by the president's call to end the green energy tax credits.

What's going on?

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said that he's considering the idea of holding a "vote-a-rama" by midweek to get President Trump's bill passed in the upper chamber.

This comes at the same time GOP senators are still negotiating several different parts of the bill, with fiscal hawks wanting more cut and moderates trying to save what they can.

Trump, on the other hand, held nothing back in his Truth Social post demanding the energy credit cuts, going as far as calling them a "scam."

"I HATE 'GREEN TAX CREDITS' IN THE GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL. They are largely a giant SCAM. I would much prefer that this money be used somewhere else, including reductions. “Anywhere” would be preferable! Windmills, and the rest of this 'JUNK,' are the most expensive and inefficient energy in the world, is destroying the beauty of the environment, and is 10 times more costly than any other energy," Trump wrote.

Trump added, "None of it works without massive government subsidy (energy should NOT NEED SUBSIDY!). Also, it is almost exclusively made in China!!! It is time to break away, finally, from this craziness!!!"

The Daily Caller noted:

Trump frequently called for the complete repeal of the ‘Green New Scam,’ his nickname for certain provisions of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), on the campaign trail. No Republican lawmakers voted for the legislation when Biden signed it into law in August 2022.

Social media reacts

Trump found plenty of support for his statements on the green energy credit "scam" across social media.

"President Trump is right!! 'Green' tax credits are a SCAM. Americans are being forced to subsidize expensive, unreliable energy that destroys our environment and enriches the CCP. We will end this insanity!!" Rep. Mary Miller wrote on X.

Another X user wrote, "POTUS Trump is always right about everything."

It'll be fascinating to see if Senate Republicans are able to fulfill Trump's wishes on this one.
