Ghoulish Virginia Democrat resurrects dead congressman's social media account for votes

Everyone knows that politics is a dirty business, but it's not every day that you see a deceased lawmaker being used as a campaign tool.

In an eerie display, the social media account for the late Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly has come back to life ahead of the special election to fill his Virginia seat.

Connolly's chief of staff, James Walkinshaw, is running to become Connolly's successor, but the Walkinshaw campaign is acting like Connolly never died at all.

Dead Democrat comes back...

Taking the concept of an endorsement to a whole new low, Walkinshaw is sending fundraising emails in Connolly's name and using the dead congressman's social media clout to chase votes.

A post from Connolly's X account includes a photo of the congressman with Walkinshaw and this caption: "Early voting starts TODAY in VA-11! Before passing, Gerry endorsed @JamesWalkinshaw to carry the torch."

"Let’s honor that legacy and vote for bold leadership that’ll fight for us every day," the post adds.

The late congressman's account notes in its bio that he is no longer among the living, and all posts are made "with the consent of the Connolly family."

Connolly's endorsement of Walkinshaw is "pinned" prominently at the top of the account.

No limits for ghoulish Dems

Connolly had yet to step aside when he died from cancer last month at age 75. His death led to a fresh debate on the age of lawmakers in Washington D.C., where some senior politicians are still working in their 80s (Chuck Grassley, the reigning champ, is 91).

The Democratic primary for Connolly's seat falls on June 28, with Walkinshaw the heavy favorite. The primary winner is all but certain to be elected on September 9 in the special election.

Still, Walkinshaw is leaving nothing up to chance, and he doesn't care who he offends in the process.

There's something unquestionably tasteless about using a dead man's legacy to scrape together some votes in a political campaign, even if Connolly's family is okay with it. Is there no rest for the dead?

Then again, this is the party that made murdering innocent babies into a major part of its platform. They have no respect for the living or the dead.

For Democrats, the pursuit of power justifies anything and everything. It's a hustle that never ends until we draw our last breath - and even then, the bets are off.
