Former Biden White House official allegedly didn't know who was authorizing use of autopen
This week saw the former director of President Joe Biden's Domestic Policy Council give closed-door testimony to Capitol Hill lawmakers.
This reportedly included admitting that she used the presidential autopen without knowing exactly who had given her authorization to do so.
Source claims that official said autopen use approved by unknown figures
That's according to Fox News, which cited a source said to be familiar with what Neera Tanden told members of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday.
The committee is investigating the extent to which White House figures helped conceal Biden's mental decline as well as their alleged use of an autopen, a mechanical device that allows an individual's signature to be copied onto a document.
An Oversight Committee staff member explained to Fox News that during Tanden's five-hour testimony, she described directing that an autopen be used to replicate the president's signature on his behalf.
The staffer added that while Tanden claimed Biden was in charge of his administration, she was unaware of who was ultimately authorizing her autopen use.
The former Domestic Policy Council director is said to have recalled sending memos to the president's inner circle, which would then be approved by unknown figures.
House Oversight Committee chair: Testimony "raises serious questions"
Fox News noted that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer quickly put out a statement following Tandem's appearance.
"Ms. Tanden testified that she had minimal interaction with President Biden, despite wielding tremendous authority," Comer remarked.
"She explained that to obtain approval for autopen signatures, she would send decision memos to members of the President’s inner circle and had no visibility of what occurred between sending the memo and receiving it back with approval," he stressed.
"Her testimony raises serious questions about who was really calling the shots in the Biden White House amid the President’s obvious decline. We will continue to pursue the truth for the American people," the Kentucky Republican went on to add.
Attorney general also investigating usage of autopen
The House Oversight Committee is not alone in investigating autopen use during President Biden's time in office, as Attorney General Pam Bondi is as well.
The Hill reported earlier this month that President Donald Trump ordered Bondi to examine "whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden’s mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the President."
This will include reviewing Biden's appointment of 200 federal judges, along with the issuance of pardons and acts of clemency.
