Michelle Obama makes divorce rumors worse with non-denial
During an interview with Rachel Martin, host of NPR's Wild Card podcast, released Thursday, former First Lady Michelle Obama's non-denial that there are problems in her marriage to former President Barack Obama has led to even more questions and speculations.
'The fact that people don't see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,' she told Martin, who joked that it was "the apocalypse."
"It's the apocalypse," Obama repeated sarcastically. "We don't take selfies."
"It's like, 'OK, so we don't Instagram every minute of our lives.' We are 60. We're 60, y'all. You just are not gonna know what we're doing every minute of the day," she said.
No full denial
One thing Obama did not say directly was "a full denial that her marriage is over," the Daily Mail noted.
The rumors started when Michelle failed to show up to several high-profile events (Jimmy Carter's funeral and President Donald Trump's inauguration), then missed the couple's courtside seats at the NBA finals in March.
She has made attempts to assuage the rumors, posting pictures of the couple on vacation with their two adult daughters and saying that she and Barack aren't the type to "give up" and that he's her "person."
Those statements have been counterbalanced by other comments like those above. She has also said that marriage is "hard" for her and that she is in therapy to help her "transition" now that she is an empty nester.
Rumors will persist
If the Obamas really wanted to quell the rumors, wouldn't they just come right out and give the direct denial that the public has been wanting?
The rumors will continue to persist until that happens, even if they aren't true.
The famous power couple would hardly be the first to break up after the kids were grown and in their case, after Michelle was no longer needed to act as a loving wife for the sake of her husband's political career.
In reality, it's none of the public's business what is happening between the Obamas beyond closed doors.
If Michelle wanted intense scrutiny on her life, she undoubtedly would have run for president in 2024 and cleaned Trump's clock in the process.
It's rumors like this that have solidified her resolve to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible, given her status as a media figure and bestselling author.
While she's willing to use her high profile to make millions and support her lavish lifestyle, she would rather be left alone and doesn't welcome any more intrusion into her personal life.
