Donald and Melania make an appearance at the FIFA World Cup
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump made a very public appearance at the FIFA World Cup final in the MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The pair reportedly made their way up to see the event from the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster to watch a match between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, as the New York Post reported.
The Trumps waved at the crowd and generally seemed to interact positively during the game, and got a preview of what kind of match the United States is set to host next year.
One year ago
Trump’s visit to the World Cup final took place on the anniversary of his assassination attempt in Butler, Pa., when he was shot in the ear.
While the president didn’t make any plans to public plans to commemorate the date, he did recently take part in an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, which aired on Saturday evening.
He spoke to the attempt on his life, saying, “Well, it was unforgettable … I didn’t know exactly what was going on. I got whacked. There’s no question about that.
“And fortunately, I got down quickly. People were screaming, and I got down quickly, fortunately, because I think they shot eight bullets.”
Melania’s influence
While Melania Trump clearly takes on the traditional first lady duties with plenty of grace and careful consideration, her husband has been clear that she also gives him advice on some issues of international importance.
Trump said that his decision to take a firm stance on Russian President Vladimir Putin was due in part to Melania reminding him of how the Russian president doesn’t keep his promises.
“I go home, I tell the first lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.’ She said, ‘Oh, really? another city was just hit,’” he said, talking about one of their recent calls.
Trump and big events
Trump his a long and strong history of making his way to big sporting events.
Particularly during his second term in office, Trump has made his way to both the Super Bowl LIX and UFC fights.
This was the first family’s first attendance of the year at a major FIFA game, but the longtime sports fan wouldn’t be out of place at almost any major sporting event, and has a particularly great relationship with UFC CEO Dana White.
Trump even announced earlier this month that he plans to hold a UFC fight at the White House sometime within the next year to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
