House Oversight Committee raises possible subpoenas of Joe and Jill Biden in cognitive decline probe

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has been investigating the alleged cover-up of former President Joe Biden's apparent cognitive decline and the impact it had on his presidency, which thus far has included largely fruitless interviews with some former senior White House aides and staffers.

Given the minimal cooperation the committee has received, some top members are reportedly now considering calling in the former president and former first lady Jill Biden for questioning about how the White House handled his declining health, according to Fox News.

That consideration reportedly includes the possibility of issuing subpoenas to compel their appearances before the committee, if necessary.

"Every option is on the table"

Speaking to reporters this week, and in response to a query about whether former President Biden might be called in for questioning, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said, "Every option is on the table. We're going to try to get answers. We're going to try to do this rapidly."

"We'll decide as a committee what steps to take next and who to bring in," he added. "But I think right now every option is on the table."

Those comments came after Anthony Bernal, the former chief of staff of the former first lady, refused to answer any questions and pleaded the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a subpoenaed interview earlier this week. Likewise, former White House Physician Kevin O'Connor similarly pleaded the Fifth when he was subpoenaed to testify before the committee last week.

Everyone "needs to be subpoenaed," including the Bidens

According to Fox News, Oversight Committee member Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) was less circumspect than Chairman Comer when asked about the possibility of bringing in the former president and first lady for questioning, though he stressed that he was speaking only for himself and not any other committee members.

"As far as I'm concerned, every member of the Biden administration at this point needs to be subpoenaed," Donalds said. "I don't care if they were a secretary. I don't care if they were a janitor working in there. They've all got to come in and answer questions."

When asked if that included Jill Biden, Donalds replied, "Of course," and then shifted his attention to Bernal's closed-door deposition that lasted less than an hour, largely because he declined to answer any of the committee's questions.

"Her right-hand man -- listen, Anthony Bernal was the right-hand man. That's her guy, her chief of staff," the Florida congressman said. "If he came in here and pleaded the Fifth, I'm sorry, the former first lady, she's got to come in here and answer questions."

Biden claims he "made every decision"

For what it is worth, former President Biden claimed in a recent New York Times interview that he "made every decision" about last-minute pardons and commutations on his own -- though the article itself suggested otherwise in the buried details, and instead lent credence to the allegations that Biden's inner circle largely determined who would receive clemency warrants signed by an autopen without the president's direct oversight.

Chairman Comer referenced that article in his official statement in response to Bernal's pleading the Fifth during his subpoenaed deposition, and said, "This week, new reporting confirms President Biden’s aides took unauthorized executive actions during his presidency amid his cognitive decline. It’s no surprise that Anthony Bernal is pleading the Fifth Amendment to shield himself from criminal liability."

"During his deposition today, Mr. Bernal pleaded the Fifth when asked if any unelected official or family members executed the duties of the President and if Joe Biden ever instructed him to lie about his health," he continued.

"This is a historic scandal and Americans demand transparency and accountability," Comer added. "We will continue to pursue the truth on their behalf and examine options to get the answers we need."
