U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just told a reporter that he is a good candidate for Alcatraz Prison.

The Daily Caller reports that Pelosi made this comment to Scripps News Congressional Correspondent Nathanial Reed last week.

This comes as the administration of President Donald Trump gets ready to reopen Alcatraz. There will be more on this in a moment. First, though, take a look at this:

"You'd be a good candidate"

The exchange began with Reed asking Pelosi about the idea of reopening Alcatraz Prison. "Based on what you know, how long would it take to refit Alcatraz to be suitable for prisoners?" the reporter asked.

Pelosi replied:

Well it depends on how many prisoners they think they are going to put there. Is it for one, like Elba? Or is it for a couple hundred people, but I don’t think its ever going to happen.

At this point, the congresswoman started to question Reed, asking him if he had ever been to Alcatraz. After he replied affirmatively, Pelosi asked, "So you wouldn’t want to live there, even as a prisoner, right?"

It is unclear what Reed said in response, but Pelosi jumped on him.

"You’d like those cells?. Well maybe you’d be a good candidate for the way it is now, I don’t know," she said.

Background

The Trump administration is working to reopen Alcatraz.

Back in May 2025, he put out a statement, writing:

REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets. That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders. We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally. The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Since then, his administration has taken steps to try to make this happen.

Just recently, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum appeared in San Francisco to announce the reopening of the prison.

It is unclear, however, what the timeline for the opening looks like.
