Democrat governor praises Trump for securing the border
To the surprise of many, a Democratic governor just praised President Donald Trump for securing the U.S.-Mexico border.
Breitbart News reports that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) did so during a recent appearance on the Fox News Channel.
As we will see, Moore is not the only Democrat to praise Trump recently.
Clearly, they have slightly tweaked their Trump strategy.
"Oh, yeah"
During his appearance on Fox's "Special Report," Moore spoke about the need to "secure the border" and "to get violent criminals out of our neighborhoods."
This, already, is surprising messaging coming from a Democrat. Perhaps, Moore is one of the few Democrats who understands that Trump's approach to this issue is extremely popular.
But, Moore's statement was such a surprise that host Bret Baier jumped in to ask, "And you give credit to the Trump administration for the securing of the border, right?"
"Oh, yeah," Moore replied.
He continued:
But I think what we have is we need to make sure that we understand and are following the Constitution on it. We have watched a securing of a border, which becomes incredibly important. But the thing that I also know is that this idea that we need quotas or arbitrary numbers, 3,000 people who are going to be deported every single day, that’s not a data-backed number. And, frankly, that’s not going after violent criminals. Who it’s going after is people like who I’ve spoken to on the Eastern Shore who are saying that they now have workers who are chicken workers who are now not showing up for work or the person who has an employee from Ecuador who’s a single father and a child with special needs who is now recently deported.
A change in strategy?
As mentioned, Moore is not the only Democrat to praise Trump recently. U.S. Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Jim Himes (D-CT) are two others.
During a recent outing, Khanna admitted that "Trump's a very talented politician." He hastened to add, "I don’t agree with him as a leader. He’s a very talented politician."
As for Himes, The Hill reports:
He pointed to Trump’s “practical approach” in the Middle East, including the signing of an executive order in January to end sanctions against Syria after the unexpected collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime. “I mean, the opening to Syria, I did not anticipate that. That’s pretty amazing…. I give the president and his administration credit for this — to build up and support the Syrian regime,” Himes said.
These statements in praise of Trump are extremely qualified, as would be expected from the Democrats.
But, this does mark a significant shift, as, for the better part of the past decade, Democrats, for the most part, have insisted that virtually everything Trump has done is wrong.
