Trump administration withdraws from UNESCO, slams 'woke' agenda
President Donald Trump has long aimed criticism at the United Nations and the various institutions associated with it.
Another example of Trump's derision came this week when his administration withdrew from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
State Department slams "globalist, ideological agenda"
As Breitbart reported, Trump's decision was announced via a statement that was released on Tuesday by State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.
"Today, the United States informed Director-General Audrey Azoulay of the United States’ decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Continued involvement in UNESCO is not in the national interest of the United States," Bruce began.
"UNESCO works to advance divisive social and cultural causes and maintains an outsized focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy," she continued.
The spokeswoman went on, "UNESCO’s decision to admit the 'State of Palestine' as a Member State is highly problematic, contrary to U.S. policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization."
White House: UNESCO promotes "woke" causes
Bruce asserted that henceforth, "[c]ontinued U.S. participation in international organizations will focus on advancing American interests with clarity and conviction."
Her statement concluded by saying, "Pursuant to Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, U.S. withdrawal will take effect on December 31, 2026. The United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until that time."
According to Fox News, Bruce's words were echoed in a similar statement put out by White House Deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly.
Kelly complained that UNESCO "supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for in November."
"This president will always put America First and ensure our country’s membership in all international organizations aligns with our national interests," she maintained.
Reversing Biden
Meanwhile, Breitbart recalled the fact that this is not the first time that Trump has taken America out of UNESCO, as he previously did so in 2018.
That decision was subsequently reversed by former President Joe Biden in June of 2023, with that move welcomed by UNESCO's director-general at the time.
It's a historic moment! So happy to announce that the #UnitedStates has officially rejoined @UNESCO. Our Organization now has 194 Member States & is moving towards universality. Now the US is back, UNESCO will do more worldwide for education, culture, science & press freedom.🇺🇳🇺🇸
