Supporters of former President and first lady Joe and Jill Biden just learned some devastating news about the Biden family.

The Bidens' daughter, Ashley, has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years, Philadelphia-based plastic surgeon and health care investor Howard Krein, according to Newsweek.

The papers were filed on Monday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and are not publicly accessible, which means the details about the split will remain unknown to the American people.

Filed for divorce on Monday

The Philadelphia Inquirer was the first to report on the filing of divorce papers by Ashley Biden, 44, against Howard Krein, 58, and confirmed the matter with a spokesperson for the former first daughter.

Biden has not specifically commented on the filing, but she did make a couple of since-deleted social media posts that gave the public a hint of her frame of mind about the split, according to People magazine.

In one post, she gave a thumbs-up while walking in a park with Beyonce's "Freedom" playing in the background, while in another post, set to the tune of Lauryn Hill's "Freedom Time," Biden posted a quote that said, "New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before."

Married in 2012

People reported that the Catholic Biden and Jewish Krein were wed in June 2012 in a mixed tradition ceremony at a Roman Catholic church in Greenville, Delaware, during which the bride was given away in front of around 200 guests by her proud father, then-Vice President Biden.

The Biden family hosted a reception afterward at their home in Wilmington, which Joe had reportedly personally attended and overseen beforehand to ensure that everything was set up for his daughter.

At the time, the politician shared with the media outlet how the groom had sought his permission for the marriage, and said of Krein, "This is the right guy. And he’s getting a helluva woman."

Krein had reportedly been introduced to Ashley in the summer of 2010 by her older brother, Beau, and the pair were engaged a little more than a year later in the fall of 2011.

Ethical and conflict of interest concerns about Krein

While Ashley Biden, a social worker and Democratic activist, has largely led a private life shielded from public scrutiny, her soon-to-be-ex is a bit more of a publicly known commodity, given his status as a prominent plastic surgeon in Philadelphia and role as a professor at Thomas Jefferson University, per Newsweek.

Krein also works at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson as the senior director of health policy and innovation, and further serves as the chief medical officer for a venture capital investment firm known as StartUp Health, which caused some controversy during former President Biden's 2020 presidential run.

According to Politico in October 2010, ethical and conflict-of-interest questions were raised about the fact that Krein served as a coronavirus pandemic and health policy advisor to Biden while his firm was simultaneously soliciting bids from entrepreneurs for pandemic-related investment ideas.

Krein's firm, which had numerous dubious foreign ties, had also worked closely with the prior Obama administration on its cancer "moonshot" initiative, among other healthcare-related things.
