DANIEL VAUGHAN: Democrats Miss The Crime Point - Again.
Trump's takeover of Washington D.C. is as predictable as it is Democrats pretending there's no rational thing to respond to. Like Biden's mental and health decline and the southern border, Democrats are missing the point, which gives Trump another easy issue to respond to with a no-brainer response.
Americans don't like crime. This point is not rocket science or some deep topic in political science. It's not even a partisan issue. When any city, state, or region of the country experiences a surge in crime, people demand a response.
Democrats denied there was a problem with illegal immigration, even while story after story dropped of people being murdered or raped by illegal immigrants captivated the country's attention. Democrats denied this existed. They did the same on Biden, telling everyone to deny the obvious things they could see with their eyes.
It's happening again with Washington D.C.
The popular response is that crime is dropping in the nation's capital. The mayor and Democrats point to stats.
Here's the problem: we know those statistics are wrong. Barely a month ago, the D.C. police were caught falsifying crime statistics. According to reports, "The union claims police supervisors in the department manipulate crime data to make it appear violent crime has fallen considerably compared to last year. [Michael] Pulliam — the former commander of the 3rd District that patrols Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights — was placed on leave with pay and told he was under investigation for questionable changes to crime data."
The D.C. police union went further, "When our members respond to the scene of a felony offense where there is a victim reporting that a felony occurred, inevitably there will be a lieutenant or a captain that will show up on that scene and direct those members to take a report for a lesser offense ... So, instead of taking a report for a shooting or a stabbing or a carjacking, they will order that officer to take a report for a theft or an injured person to the hospital or a felony assault, which is not the same type of classification."
The same Democrats who claim the BLS numbers are now bad because Donald Trump fired people in that agency are openly pushing crime statistics in a police department with an open investigation into crime data manipulation.
This issue is not complicated to solve and shouldn't catch Democrats off guard. D.C. has a crime problem. While reporting on the topic, ABC News anchor Kyra Philips described how she and others in the news office of D.C. were either robbed, assaulted, or jumped at while heading to the office.
The problem is obvious. What's astonishing is that we're hitting yet another issue where Democrats cannot even pretend to have an answer.
I don't expect both parties to be perfect on all the issues. Republicans have decades of incompetence in trying to respond to any healthcare or insurance issue in politics. It's a weak spot for the party, and Democrats continue to abuse them over it.
But crime is just as much of a bread-and-butter, kitchen table topic. Living in open denial that the nation's capital has an open crime problem is quite a feat for people who legislate there. Supporting police departments and finding ways to lower crime and make people safe should be a bipartisan issue.
However, we do have to remember, the Democratic Party is enthralled with Zohran Mamdani in New York, who is still advocating for defunding the police, and replacing cops on the street with social workers. The Democratic Party is overtaken with people who think they've stumbled across new theories of politics that allow them to create political solutions to civilizational problems while ignoring everything that came before.
It's happening again. Democrats are blind to crime. The press is following Democrats right along this same path. It doesn't matter how many explainers they run on immigration, Biden being whip smart, or how crime is low; no one believes them.
We're watching a party that is wholly disconnected from reality. That's not to say they can't win elections in 2026. You don't have to be popular or on top of things to win elections - see Republicans from 2008-2016.
But it is to say this: when Americans are looking around and seeing an undeniable problem, Democrats are nowhere to be found. When people are murdered, assaulted, and more in the nation's capital, the message from Democrats is: you're imagining things.
And when you point out the obvious: that the D.C. police department is lying about its crime statistics, you get ignored. Go ahead and compare the thinkpieces in the media decrying the BLS firings versus the D.C. Police Department.
For many Americans, it is news that the D.C. police may be lying about their statistics. For Democrats, that's a story that never happened. But these are the points we've come to expect from a party out of touch with reality.
That leaves Donald Trump with the easiest political choice of all: point out the most obvious thing in the news, and work on fixing it.
