A Democrat who is looking to become the next governor of South Carolina is refusing to drop out of the running after a tape of his recent arrest went public.

The candidate, according to Newsmax, is Charleston, South Carolina, Attorney Mullins McLeod.

Suffice it to say that his arrest footage has garnered a lot of attention. Take a look, and you'll understand why:

Background

What caught the attention of many, besides the arrest itself, was the way McLeod handled the arrest.

The Daily Mail reports:

A candidate for South Carolina's governor race was caught going on a bizarre rant in the back of a cop car after he was found wandering around in his underwear. Democrat William 'Mullins' McLeod, 53, was arrested by Charleston Police on May 15 after he was found 'yelling at the top of his lungs' while walking around the city in only underwear and shoes, reported WCBD.

Camera footage from the arrest was released early last week.

The outlet sums it up, writing:

After an officer asked McLeod for his name, the lawyer responded, 'It doesn't matter, my friend. Trust me. I'm one of the most just humans to ever walk this soil.' He continued, 'I'm just human... I'll tell you what, you gotta give me a name? Superman sounds good. I'm Superman.' McLeod appeared to address his gubernatorial run during the incident, yelling, 'Let me tell you something, when I'm governor.' He also made threats towards his political opponents and said, 'I'm gonna kick your f*****g teeth in,' about Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson, who is also running for governor.

The question, of course, is what caused this kind of behaviour. The answer remains unclear, at the time of this writing.

He won't drop out

Now, there are calls for McLeod to drop out of the running.

Despite the above footage, though, McLeod says that he will not be doing so.

In a social media post, he said:

I share with the voters that no matter how much they try to silence me, no matter how much they tried to get me out of this race, that I would not stand down. I made that commitment to you, and I told you in that letter that I prepared my entire adult life for what lies ahead. Well, this is the precise moment that I was talking about in that letter. This is the precise moment I prepared my entire adult life to handle.

He continued with more of the same.

McLeod added:

Now, I know the political storm is all around me, but my rhetoric is true. My rhetoric is true, folks. My plan and my purpose has never been clearer. So, I'm going to keep my head down and I'm going to keep working, and I'm going to keep being the perfectly imperfect person that God made me to be.
