Washington, D.C., is a mess and has been for some time. Earlier this year, a high-ranking Metropolitan Police Department official was placed on administrative leave after it was suspected that they were manipulating crime data to make the numbers appear lower.

According to the Associated Press, President Donald Trump's Department of Justice has now opened a broader investigation into whether or not D.C. police officials have purposely altered crime data to make the situation look not as bad as it actually is.

Two people familiar with the DOJ probe confirmed the investigation to the Associated Press.

They were reportedly not authorized to speak about the investigation at this point in time.

What's going on?

Earlier this month, President Trump enraged D.C. Democrats after he announced the federalization of the D.C. Police Department, which allows National Guard troops to assist.

Trump made the move based on crime in the nation's capital, which has spiraled out of control, though some Democrats and police officials would have us believe otherwise.

The Associated Press noted that it wasn't clear at this time what federal crimes would have been violated if the crime statistics were altered, though it's safe to presume that Attorney General Pam Bondi has something ready.

The AP noted:

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office declined to comment on the investigation. A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Jeannine Pirro’s office in Washington didn’t respond to emails seeking comment.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser provided comment regarding the investigation into all seven districts of the MPD, noting that it was only one commander that caused any concerns .

The AP added:

Bowser told the television station last Tuesday that the city’s police chief “had concerns about one commander, investigated all seven districts and verified that the concern was with one person.”

Arrests mounting

Since Trump's federal intervention, hundreds of arrests have occurred on the streets of the nation's capital.

Fox News reported that FBI Director Kash Patel vowed to continue his mission to make D.C.'s streets safer, noting some 550 arrests since the federal takeover began.

"The men and women of the FBI, working side by side with our local law enforcement partners, have taken hundreds of dangerous criminals off the streets of Washington, D.C. This is proof of what happens when good cops are empowered to do their jobs the right way," Patel said in a statement to the outlet.

He added, "Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re bringing historic resources to this fight because crime in our nation’s capital is unacceptable – and we will continue until every community is safe."
