Texas Democrats fail to prevent passage of new congressional map

This month saw most of Texas's Democrats lawmakers flee the state in an attempt to thwart GOP plans for congressional redistricting.

Yet those efforts ended in a humiliating failure, with the new electoral map passing on Wednesday by a vote of 88 to 52.

New electoral map expected to result in five new Republican seats

According to The Hill, members of the Texas House Republican Caucus announced their victory in a social media post, writing, "PASSED THE HOUSE."

"The Big Beautiful Map will ADD 5 GOP districts to our congressional delegation – A HUGE WIN for the conservative movement in Texas!" they went on to add.

The Hill noted how the map must now be passed by the Texas state Senate, after which it can be signed into law by Gov. Gregg Abbott.

Passage of bill preceded by heated exchanges between state lawmakers

The hours leading up to the vote were marked by heated exchanges, including one between Democratic state Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins and Republican state Rep. Todd Hunter, who introduced the bill.

"Question, would you believe it would be a great process to include the public in a way that they could see what’s going on, or do we want to do the things in the cloak of darkness here?" Gervin-Hawkins demanded at one point.

"Well, you’ve been gone on the cloak of darkness for 18 days," Hunter shot back, making reference to how Democrats previously hid out of state.

What's more, The Hill pointed out how Democrats put forward a number of amendments that would have effectively gutted the bill, all of which were rejected.

Democrats say they will challenge new electoral map in court

For his part, Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder indicated that the party is prepared to challenge the new electoral map in court.

"This was a deliberate violation of the Voting Rights Act, aimed at diluting the voices of minority voters across the state," Scudder was quoted as saying in a statement.

"This cracking of majority-minority districts is disgraceful, and it’s all to help Donald Trump avoid accountability for his actions," he insisted.

"This fight is far from over," the party chair asserted before going on to add, "We, and the American people, will see this map in court."
