Abbott banned use of taxpayer dollars to fund travel for abortions
The fight over abortion is far from over, and Republican-led states are at the forefront of the effort, legislating at the state level to protect the unborn.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed a law that bans the use of taxpayer money to support the travel and other logistics for women seeking abortion, as Breitbart News reported.
The bill, which was Senate Bill 33, was signed by Abbott on Aug. 19, and specifically banned local governments from using their funds to assist with abortion seeking measures.
The new law will go into effect on Sept. 1, after Republican Sen. Donna Campbell and Rep. Candy Noble championed it through both houses of the state legislature.
Change in law
The bill was signed at a ceremony where the governor also signed Senate Bill 31, which was called the Life of the Mother Act, which clarifies the duty of doctors.
This bill ensures that doctors can provide care to women in life-threatening pregnancy complications, before the risk becomes imminent, and not face prosecution.
The Life of the Mother Act ensures that doctors will not be prosecuted when “the death or injury to the unborn child was accidental or unintentional.”
The legislation also clarifies treatment parameters for miscarriage and non-viable pregnancies, such as ectopic pregnancies.
From Abbott
In a press release from Abbott’s office about the new laws, the governor said both laws are part of Texas’s fierce pro-life identity.
“In Texas, we support mothers and their children,” Abbott said, before going on to talk about the new legislation and what it means for the state.
He said he is “proud to sign a law to ban taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. Texas is a pro-life and pro-family state. With these laws, we will stay that way.”

More support
Other political figures, aside from the legislation’s sponsors, also supported the bill, which defines Texas's legal limits for abortion, including Policy Director for Texas Values Jonathan Covey.
Covey spoke out, saying, “By signing SB 33 we are putting an end to this dangerous and wasteful practice and ensuring that the sanctity of life is being upheld as the citizens of Texas intended.”
