Trump blasts GOP Senator Chuck Grassley for Senate obstruction of nominees
President Donald Trump tore into Senator Chuck Grassley as his frustration with the obstruction of his nominees has become outright rage.
Grassley, who is the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is taking heat from Trump over the constant obstruction of Trump's nominees to key legal positions.
Democrats have abused a nearly century-old Senate tradition allowing senators of the opposing party to make it more difficult to pass a president's judicial nominees.
While Congressional traditions have to be respected, the obstruction of Trump's nominees has reached the point of absurdity. It's eight months into Trump's 2nd term in the White House, and not nearly enough of Trump's nominees have been confirmed.
Grassley simply lacks the backbone to be decisive and recognize that confirming Trump's nominees is more important than an old tradition that Democrats would happily ignore if the circumstances were reversed.
Slow grinding obstruction
The tradition in question, known as the 'blue-slip process,' has been flouted by Democrats multiple times under previous administrations.
However, Grassley is too cowardly to tell Democrats to, in the words of Trump, "go to Hell!" As Republicans hold power in the Senate and Democrats have already disregarded the rule, there is no argument against suspending the tradition to move things along.
In a post to Truth Social, Trump called on Grassley to "allow strong Republican candidates to ascend to these very vital and powerful roles, and tell the Democrats, as they often tell us, to go to Hell!"
What we are seeing with Grassley and the Senate GOP is the same old tired behavior that has slowed Trump's agenda multiple times. Old GOP Senators are not willing to actually wield power, something that is not true of Democrats when they have power.
Grassley responded to these comments from Trump with a cowardly post to X by saying, "As chairman, I set [President] Trump [nominations] up for success, not failure."
Grassley is setting up every nomination for failure by allowing Democrats to obstruct every single nominee. This isn't a matter of blocking a bad nominee; rather, Democrats are blocking all nominees purely to grind Trump's agenda to a halt.
Alina Habba removal
The frustration with the Senate GOP's slow movement has been exacerbated by the removal of Alina Habba as acting United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, as she has yet to be confirmed by the Senate, thanks to Democrats.
Appointees may serve for up to 120 days while the confirmation process works out, meaning that Democrats simply had to block her nomination until her interim time ran out, and now there is a massive headache for the White House.
While Trump attempted to circumvent this issue, Democrats had the help of an Obama-appointed federal judge who doubled down on removing Habba and replacing her with Desiree Leigh Grace.
Grassley has the power to end this madness, and if he refuses to use it, he deserves to lose his job. Unfortunately, Grassley isn't due for an election until 2028, and he's already the oldest sitting senator at age 91, meaning he can continue to get away with this spineless behavior.
