Trump threatens lawsuit over 'blue-slipping' tradition that prevents appointment of fed judges
President Donald Trump isn't the type of person who will lay down and let people walk all over him, and he's proven that again and again during his continued, numerous legal battles to push his policy agenda forward despite pockets of extreme resistance in Washington D.C.
According to Fox News, Trump has threatened to file a lawsuit to bypass the 100-year-old tradition of "blue-slipping," which gives state senators an unofficial final say on approving nominees for federal judgeships or U.S. attorneys.
The practice isn't even codified law, but is often used to buck an opposing party's president from appointing judges and U.S. attorneys.
The president has railed against blue-slipping several times, and most recently has called upon Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to quit supporting the left and their use of the method.
What's going on?
During a recent event at the Oval Office, involving Trump signing an executive order that addresses the elimination of cashless bail, Trump made it clear to reporters that he's not fond of the practice, tradition or not.
"We're also going to be filing a lawsuit on blue slipping," Trump told reporters. "You know, blue slips make it impossible for me as president to appoint a judge or a U.S. attorney because they have a gentlemen's agreement that's about 100 years old."
In a Truth Social post, the president expressed his thoughts on the issue.
"I have a Constitutional Right to appoint Judges and U.S. Attorneys, but that RIGHT has been completely taken away from me in States that have just one Democrat United States Senator," Trump wrote.
He then specifically called out Sen. Grassley.
"This is because of an old and outdated 'custom' known as a BLUE SLIP, that Senator Chuck Grassley, of the Great State of Iowa, refuses to overturn, even though the Democrats, including Crooked Joe Biden (Twice!), have done so on numerous occasions. Therefore, the only candidates that I can get confirmed for these most important positions are, believe it or not, Democrats! Chuck Grassley should allow strong Republican candidates to ascend to these very vital and powerful roles, and tell the Democrats, as they often tell us, to go to HELL!" Trump wrote.
Social media reacts
Trump's supporters overwhelmingly supported the president's strong message on banning the practice.
"If Republicans want an endgame where the democrat party behaves responsibly, you must fight fire with fire. Hold them to the same standard as they did to the GOP" one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "It’s a 100 year old tradition set up during a democrat majority. We owe them nothing."
If anyone can get rid of useless old traditions that prevent him from doing what he needs to do, it's Trump.
