California Republicans file second petition to stop redistricting
Republicans in California have dug in their heels at Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redistrict his state, and are looking to keep the already slim minority for their state intact.
The Republicans just filed their second legal challenge to Newsom’s effort to redraw the congressional lines in the state, as Breitbart News reported.
Previously, the legislature approved a redistricting ballot measure that would go before voters this fall.
However, the petition, as described by the Republicans in a press conference this week, asks for the state supreme court to intervene and keep the proposition off the ballot.
From Lawmakers
At this point, the Republicans in the far-left state are looking for any relief at all in dealing with the outspoken Democrat majority.
“As our petition to the Supreme Court, filed an hour ago, says, they broke the rules in multiple ways,” said Mike Columbo of the Dhillon Law Group, who is speaking for California Republicans.
“One, they combined two unrelated subjects into one measure, forcing voters into an illegal take-it-or-leave-it choice on two separate subjects.”
He went on to outline the second issue, saying that there are ”constitutional provisions in force now say that redistricting has to be done by the independent citizens commissions.”
The Big Mistake
According to Republicans who object to the plan to redraw the map, it is not only unfair to voters but outright illegal and a violation of state law.
“By engaging in the redistricting process already before asking for voters to grant it the power to do so, the Legislature has exceeded its power under the Constitution,” Columbo said.
The attorney also cited what he believes are issues with the timing and the lack of transparency of the Democrats’ redistricting plan.
Of course we want independent redistricting. But California Democrats hijacked the "independent" system Californians voted for.
As governor I will restore the integrity of independent redistricting, which would mean at least another 12 House seats for Republicans. pic.twitter.com/Rb04IHVUOZ
