Many Democrats loudly condemned President Donald Trump's takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.

However, new crime statistics appear to have vindicated Trump's move, with even Washington's mayor admitting that it has made her city safer.

Carjackings down 87%

According to Fox News, Mayor Muriel Bowser made that acknowledgement while speaking with reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.

"For carjackings, the difference between this period, this 20-day period of this federal surge and last year represents an 87% reduction in carjackings in Washington, D.C.," the mayor was quoted as saying.

"We know that when carjackings go down, when use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer. So, this surge has been important to us for that reason," she continued.

"This is what we think in just a couple of weeks of experience has worked. Having more federal law enforcement officers on the street — we think having more stops that got to illegal guns has helped," Bowser stressed.

"We think that there is more accountability in the system, or at least perceived accountability in the system, that is driving down illegal behavior," the mayor noted.

D.C. saw a 12-day streak with no homicides

"We know that we have had fewer gun crimes, fewer homicides, and we have experienced an extreme reduction in carjackings," Bowser went on to add.

Washington also went through a 12-day long streak of no murders which only came to an end following a deadly shooting early on Tuesday morning.

The mayor's remarks came two days after Attorney General Pam Bondi put up a social media post that touted the number of arrests and gun seizures in America's capital.

Bondi highlighted the fact that federal agents and local police had made "over 1,000 arrests" and taken "more than 100 illegal guns" off the street.

"Last night, another 86 arrests including multiple suspects accused of assaulting law enforcement and National Guard — and a suspected Tren de Aragua gang member," she asserted.

What's more, the attorney general further explained that "[e]very day of our mission we are making DC safe again."
