Sen. Klobuchar calls for national 'assault weapons' ban after Catholic school shooting

It's been a while since the last school shooting, but it didn't take Democrats long for their knee-jerk, anti-gun reactions to any mass shooting that garners national attention, including the one that occurred in Minneapolis this week.

According to Breitbart, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) was one of the first to not only exploit the situation for attention, but also went as far as demanding a national ban on "assault weapons."

On Wednesday, a suspect identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire at a morning Mass at a Catholic school in southern Minneapolis.

Westman, reported to be transgender by multiple outlets, committed the shooting with a shotgun, pistol and a rifle.

What did she say?

Klobuchar blew the anti-gun whistle for her followers as loud as she could in demanding a ban on such firearms.

“As you reported, he is dead, but more will, I’m sure, come out about his motive and why he would commit such a horrific act. Of course makes me think about guns and all the work we’ve done to ban these automatic rifles and to do something when it comes to the background checks and everything, and we keep getting thwarted," she said during an MSBNC segment.

The Minnesota senator added, "We were able to pass a limited measure on a bipartisan basis, but not enough to stop something like this, and it just makes you think about that as well. Without knowing the details about how he got that gun, if the gun was legal, what kind of gun it was, but it was clearly one of these automatic rifles to be able to shoot that many kids so fast."

NBC News noted:

Two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed. Seventeen other people were injured by gunfire: 14 children ages 6 to 15 and three adults in their 80s who were parishioners in the church, officials said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The shooter left behind a trove of disturbing notes and writings, which is currently being analyzed by law enforcement officials.

Klobuchar droned on about a national gun ban to conclude her interview.

"I’ve made this clear, and again, there’ll be time to talk about this, but we need better laws on the books nationally. It just can’t be in local states. It’s got to be nationally on these assault weapons. And that is the first thing there for the military, they should be for the police. They are not for madmen like this person. I also think you’ve got to continue to work on school safety issues. I actually was the lead sponsor of that bill, but we can do all we can on that. But when you have so much access to guns right now and so many guns out there on the streets, you’re going to continue to see these kinds of mass shootings."

Social media reaction

Users across social media reacted to Klobuchar's lies regarding what kind of firearm was used.
