Weird things have happened this week at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the abrupt exit of the organization's leader, followed by an exodus of top employees.

According to the Daily Mail, just weeks after she was confirmed by the Senate, director Susan Monarez has reportedly been forced out of the top position, with no known reason as to what happened.

News of her exit triggered several other top officials at the CDC to leave their posts, causing even more confusion as to what happened behind the scenes.

The Daily Mail reported that "Dan Jernigan, National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, Deb Houry, chief medical officer, and Demetre Daskalakis, the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases," all left the agency after Monarez was pushed out.

What's going on?

Notably, Monarez was chosen by President Donald Trump to replace his first pick who was denied the job, former Republican congressman Dave Weldon. He was criticized heavily for his anti-vaccine stance.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), led by Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., released a brief statement on Monarez's abrupt exit from the agency.

"We thank her for her dedicated service to the American people," the DHS said in a statement on social media this week.

The agency added, "Secretary Kennedy has full confidence in his team at the CDC who will continue to be vigilant in protecting Americans against infectious diseases at home and abroad."

Notably, RFK held a press conference after her exit, suggesting that Monarez's forced exit was part of a wider mission to clean up the agency.

Social media reacts

Users across social media reacted to the news of the mass exit of top CDC officials.

"Democrats have been packing government and the courts long enough that it has almost led to the demise of the good ol' USA.
High time we dumped every one of the leftists from all of our government, from city, to state to Federal," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "CDC corruption purge has officially begun."

It'll be fascinating to see who's next.
