Several Democratic lawmakers are calling for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign from his position as secretary of the Health and Human Services. 

This, according to Breitbart News, includes U.S. Sens. Peter Welch (D-VT) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

This comes after Kennedy, among other things, fired the leader of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Multiple senior officials at the CDC resigned in response.

"Kennedy must resign"??

Sanders has been leading the way, among lawmakers, in calling for Kennedy's resignation.

He published an article, to this effect, in the New York Times. 

He, in part, wrote:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services, is endangering the health of the American people now and into the future. He must resign. Mr. Kennedy and the rest of the Trump administration tell us, over and over, that they want to Make America Healthy Again. That’s a great slogan. I agree with it. The problem is that since coming into office President Trump and Mr. Kennedy have done exactly the opposite.

Welch has been following in Sanders' footsteps in calling for Kennedy's resignation.

During a recent television appearance, he said:

He should be fired. He should resign and he never should have been appointed. And the fact is, by the way, he double crossed Senator Cassidy. You know, a lot of us didn’t believe it. We didn’t buy it but Senator Cassidy is a very respected colleague of Senator Murray and mine and all of us and a doctor. And he asked Kennedy on the vaccines, are you going to maintain the review system? Are you going to not set up a parallel system? Are you going to continue to respect science? And Kennedy gave him the answers that Cassidy was looking to hear. Cassidy believed him. But what you’re seeing with Secretary Kennedy right now is he’s totally and completely double crossing Senator Cassidy.

Background

Kennedy removed CDC Director Susan Monarez last week.

Fox reports:

The Trump administration announced the removal of CDC Director Susan Monarez earlier this week, less than a month after she was confirmed, after she refused Kennedy's directives to adopt new limitations on the availability of some vaccines, including for approvals for COVID-19 vaccines.

This led to resignations by several other senior officials at the CDC.

The outlet continues:

Four other senior CDC officials resigned in protest after Monarez's ouster, pointing, in part, to anti-vaccine policies pushed by Kennedy. Hundreds of workers at the agency also walked out of the CDC's headquarters in Atlanta in support of their former colleagues.

Sanders and others are now trying to use this to oust Kennedy. The Trump administration has insisted, though, that Monarez had to go because she did "not align" with the administration.
