Trial date set for Wisconsin judge accused of shielding illegal alien from ICE agents
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan made headlines in April when she was arrested for allegedly helping a migrant avoid deportation.
Dugan found herself back in the news again earlier this week when her trial was scheduled to begin on December 15.
Judge accused of shielding illegal alien from ICE agents
That's according to The Hill, which noted that U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman also set jury selection proceedings for December 11 through December 12.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted Dugan in May for "knowingly" concealing Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz.
Flores-Ruiz, who faced three counts of misdemeanor battery in Dugan's court, was also wanted for arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Dugan is alleged to have told ICE agents on April 18 that they needed a warrant to carry out a search of her court and then directed Flores-Ruiz to escape through a jury door.
"Judge Dugan became visibly angry, commented that the situation was ‘absurd,’ left the bench, and entered chambers," an FBI affidavit was quoted as saying.
Attorney general touted arrest: "No one is above the law"
Dugan's arrest was quickly touted in a social media post by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who declared, "No one is above the law.
I can confirm that our @FBI agents just arrested Hannah Dugan – a county judge in Milwaukee – for allegedly helping an illegal alien avoid an arrest by @ICEgov.

"I can confirm that our [FBI] agents just arrested Hannah Dugan – a county judge in Milwaukee – for allegedly helping an illegal alien avoid an arrest by [ICE]," she asserted.
However, many Democrats were quick to condemn the judge's arrest, including Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who said in a social media post of her own that was "not normal" and "a drastic move that threatens the rule of law."
Wisconsin senator accuses President Trump of "attacking the judicial system"
Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin spoke up as well, framing Dugan's arrest as an attack on judicial independence.
"By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders, and arresting a sitting judge, this President is putting those basic Democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line," Baldwin said in a statement.
"While details of this exact case remain minimal, this action fits into the deeply concerning pattern of this President’s lawless behavior and undermining courts and Congress’s checks on his power," she added.
