Here's what we know:
The local outlet WBTV3 was one of the first to report on the attack.
Per the outlet:
At around 9:50 p.m. on Aug. 22, a light rail passenger stabbed Iryna Zarutska, 23, several times. Officials said she was stabbed in the throat at least one time. Zarutska was pronounced dead on the light rail. Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Zarutska’s killing. Brown was ordered last week to remain in jail and undergo a competency evaluation.
There has been a video released of the incident, which can be watched above.
The incident has garnered national attention for various reasons, including the lack of condemnation of the attack by some sectors of the population.
Breitbart News reports:
Several establishment media outlets were criticized for not covering a stabbing on a North Carolina train, which resulted in the death of a Ukrainian woman. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Elon Musk, and the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, were among the people who criticized outlets such as NPR, CNN, the New York Times, and PBS for having zero stories on the deadly stabbing.
Trump weighs in
President Donald Trump did weigh in on the stabbing, which has garnered national attention.
On Monday, Fox News reports Trump as saying:
We're all people of religion, but there are evil people. And we have to confront that. I just give my love and hope to the family of the young woman who was stabbed this morning or last night in Charlotte by a madman.
Speaking of the suspect, the president said, "A lunatic just got up and started. It's right on tape. Not really watchable because it's so horrible, but just viciously stabbed. She's just sitting there."
He added, "So they're evil people. We have to be able to handle that. If we don't handle that, we don't have a country."
Trump, of course, has been taking significant steps in recent weeks to crack down on crime in major cities and the nation's capital. He has made significant progress, particularly in D.C. But, not all local governments are being cooperative.
