Florida councilman said Kirk's death was a 'fitting sacrifice'
Contention about the shooting death of conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk has swept the nation, and some liberals felt it was appropriate to respond without compassion or concern.
Palmetto Bay, Florida, councilman Steve Cody was among those who had a sharp remark about the death of the 31-year-old father of two, and now some are calling for him to step down.
Cody posted on social media after the gruesome death that, "Charlie Kirk is a fitting sacrifice to our Lords Smith & Wesson. Hallowed be their names," as Breitbart News reported.
Now, residents and officials have demanded that he resign in the aftermath of the Utah Valley University event that changed political history.
Cody’s Response to Outrage
Frustration among voters made its way back to the elected official, who is now backtracking, saying that it was obviously an inside thought, and he shouldn’t have voiced it.
"If I had thought about it longer, I probably would have just kept that thought to myself," Cody said following the outcry.
"It's not going to happen. I am term-limited out. I serve until 2028. And I intend to serve out the next 3+ years of my term.
He went on to say, “It was something that I regretted doing, that I, only after it was out, that I realized that the pain that it would cause not just to Charlie Kirk's family and friends, but to a much wider community, and that was not my intent," he added.
Public Response
City Hall was the site of those voicing their outrage, with one Palmetto Bay resident saying, "The damage has already been done. It's not a question of left or right. This is immoral, and it shows which side he is on.”
City Mayor Karyn Cunningham also didn’t side with her fellow public servant, saying that Cody's words are clearly incompatible with his role as part of the electorate's trusted figures.
"I find the post itself not fitting of the village of Palmetto Bay as elected officials. We are held to, I think, a higher bar," Cunningham said.
"It's certainly not something that I can support, and so I feel like it's in the best interest of the community for us to pivot in a different direction."
More Repercussions
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also had thoughts on it, saying, "If this Facebook post is legitimate, Steve Cody should resign from his position as Palmetto Bay Council member immediately."
Cunningham said that the council has a Sept. 17 meeting scheduled, and the issue of Cody’s comments will be on their agenda, but she said it’s up to the councilman if he wants to attend.
