Alleged Charlie Kirk assassin reportedly confessed to killing online before his arrest
Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old alleged assassin of Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk, reportedly confessed to being Kirk's shooter in a Discord private chat room hours before he was arrested for the crime.
The Washington Post reported that Robinson wrote Thursday night, "Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. "It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this."
He was arrested later that night and is being held on aggravated murder charges.
Kirk was shot from a rooftop 200 yards away as he spoke to students at Utah Valley University on Tuesday.
Massive manhunt
The shooter initially fled through the woods, leaving the rifle behind, and a massive manhunt and investigation ensued.
With cooperation from Robinson's family and roommate/romantic partner, he surrendered to police at his home.
He will be formally charged with capital murder on Tuesday, and could face the death penalty, which in Utah includes execution by firing squad.
Robertson's DNA was found on a screwdriver that police found on the roof where the shooting took place.
Discord is cooperating with the authorities about Robinson's online activities. According to the platform, there is no evidence that Robinson planned the shooting or otherwise promoted violence on Discord.
His family
It was previously reported that Robinson had a relatively normal upbringing in a conservative family, but that he left Utah State University after one semester and became heavily involved in the dark web.
The Post reported that another family member told police that Robinson had brought up Kirk's appearance at Utah Valley during a family dinner, and had talked about how he didn't like Kirk.
Robinson had a romantic relationship with his roommate, who is transitioning from male to female. His family has reported that his values are very unlike theirs.
Both his parents and roommate appear to be horrified by Robinson's actions and are fully cooperating with police, although Robinson himself is reportedly not cooperating.
Robinson's father recognized him from photos circulated by news agencies and convinced him to turn himself in.
