Trump blasts Newsom for plan to build low income housing in wildfire-ravaged areas

President Donald Trump blasted California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) for what he calls a plot to replace housing in areas ravaged by wildfires earlier this year with low-income housing, saying that it is "unfair" to those who lost their homes and were displaced.

"Shockingly, I have just learned, that Gavin Newscum, the Governor of California, is in final stages of approval to build Low Income Housing in Pacific Palisades," he posted on Truth Social. "How unfair is that to the people that have suffered so much! Newscum allowed their houses to burn by not accepting Hundreds of Millions of Gallons of Water from the Pacific Northwest, and now, the Low Income Housing starts rising long before he gets Permits for California Citizens to rebuild, but long after the Federal Permits were issued."

California law requires low-income housing to be built to replace rent-controlled apartments that burned in the fire, but Trump is referencing a different plan of Newsom's.

It was unclear why Trump opposed the plan so much, other than his perception that new low-income housing would impact property values and affect quality of life in the affluent area.

Rushing to develop

Newsom announced his plan in July to give $101 million in grants to developers who were ready to put up safe, fire-resilient multifamily low-income housing within 180 days of getting the funds.

“The 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles County have intensified the region's longstanding housing crisis, underscoring the urgent need for multifamily low-income housing development,” Jennifer Seeger, the HCD deputy director of the Division of State Financial Assistance, wrote at the time. “The Multifamily Finance Super NOFA – Los Angeles Disaster (MFSN-LA Disaster) makes funds more accessible to support the development of safe, fire-resilient multifamily low-income housing that will provide long-term stability, protect vulnerable populations, and contribute to a more equitable and resilient Los Angeles.”

Los Angeles is in the middle of a huge affordable housing crisis, with its sky-high cost of living pricing many people out of even the most basic housing.

The problem is, Democrats in the state are spending absolutely insane amounts of money to combat the homelessness they think is resulting from these issues, with very little or no change to the situation.

What's going on?

It seems like Trump thinks Newsom has gone about making these plans in an underhanded way and is trying to trick people into putting up housing that will be government-subsidized right next to McMansions.

People don't generally want that to happen, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes from a NIMBY mentality that just doesn't want to see people get the help they need because it might impact their lifestyle.

Trump didn't really say why he thinks it's a bad idea, but he surely doesn't want to see urban sprawl and blight spread any further than it already has.

Urban cityscapes are almost always liberal in spite of the fact that Democrats have done little or nothing to provide any real help for people's lives.

But the problem of affordable housing needs a solution, and houses need to get built somewhere.

I don't like the NIMBY (not in my backyard) mentality, personally, and think that communities should embrace the less fortunate and help them rise to stability and better their situations, if they are willing.
