White House press secretary gets Secret Service protection
Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary of the Trump White House, is now being protected by U.S. Secret Service.
CBS News is one of several outlets to report this information.
The change, from not receiving protection to receiving protection, came just in the past several days, following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Here's what we know:
Not a lot of information has been made publicly available about this situation by the Trump administration.
CBS News reports:
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was given a U.S. Secret Service protective detail in recent days, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The move comes in the wake of the shooting of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which sparked a conversation about the safety of high-profile individuals in public settings.
Other than this, though, not much information has been provided about the situation.
"Leavitt declined to comment," CBS writes.
It adds, "The Secret Service has not yet responded to CBS News' request for comment."
Political violence is on the rise
The Trump White House does appear to be concerned about the rise in political violence, including against members of the government.
CBS News separately reported:
The Trump administration is sending a $58 million request to Congress to increase security for the executive and judicial branches . . . A White House official confirmed the extra funds would be directed to the U.S. Marshals Service and would also include enhanced protection for Supreme Court justices. Additionally, the Trump administration expressed support for increased funding to protect congressional lawmakers, but may defer to the legislative branch on that.
The Trump administration is clearly taking what steps it can to protect members of the White House, such as Leavitt.
CBS notes that providing Secret Service protection for a White House press secretary is uncommon but not unhear of.
Per the outlet:
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, now the governor of Arkansas, was temporarily assigned a Secret Service detail at her home in 2018 while serving as President Trump's spokesperson during his first term. The assignment was made after Sanders was refused service at a restaurant in Lexington, Virginia. She tweeted about the incident, which caused an uproar on social media.
