Trump names Special Assistant Lindsey Halligan to replace fired interim U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert in Virginia's Eastern District
On Friday, President Donald Trump fired and withdrew the nomination of interim U.S. Attorney Erik Seibert, whom he'd named earlier this year to head the Justice Department's Eastern District of Virginia, but that post didn't remain vacant for long.
Little more than a day later, Trump announced that he'd selected Lindsey Halligan to replace Seibert as the top federal prosecutor in Virginia's critically important Eastern District, Fox News reported.
Halligan, who has been serving as a senior White House aide and Special Assistant to the President, previously served as one of Trump's personal attorneys on the classified documents case and other matters.
Resigned or fired?
It was widely reported on Friday that interim U.S. Attorney Seibert had been ousted from his role under pressure from the administration following his failure to swiftly pursue criminal charges for alleged mortgage fraud against Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James.
NBC News reported that Siebert announced his resignation in a letter to his colleagues, and the outlet further noted that, per its unnamed sources, the investigation into James had been stalled over concerns that the probe had uncovered insufficient evidence to secure a conviction.
President Trump saw things differently, however, and asserted that he'd fired the federal prosecutor, in large part because of the "unusually strong" backing the purported Republican attorney had received from Virginia's two Democratic senators, according to Fox News.
"Today I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia," Trump posted on Truth Social. "He didn’t quit, I fired him! Next time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican."
Pam Bondi needs some help in Virginia
The important position leading Virginia's Eastern District didn't remain empty for long, however, as President Trump announced his selection of Halligan to replace Siebert in a pair of Truth Social posts on Saturday.
In the first post, Trump praised the "great job" done thus far by Attorney General Pam Bondi, but acknowledged that she "needs a tough prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, like my recommendation, Lindsey Halligan, to get things moving."
"What we don’t need is a Democrat Endorsed 'Republican,'" he added. "I will be nominating Lindsey Halligan to be the United States Attorney in this very important part of our Great Country. She will be Fair, Smart, and will provide, desperately needed, JUSTICE FOR ALL!"
Nomination announced
The second post came just two hours later, in which President Trump wrote, "It is my honor to appoint Lindsey Halligan, who has been serving as Special Assistant to the President at the White House, as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia."
"Lindsey is a tough, smart, and loyal attorney, who has worked with me for a long time, including in the winning fight against the Weaponization of our Justice System by Crooked Joe Biden and the Radical Left Democrats, which she witnessed firsthand when she stood up for my rights during the Unconstitutional and UnAmerican raid on my home, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida," he continued.
"As a Partner at the biggest Law Firm in Florida, Lindsey proved herself to be a tremendous trial lawyer, and later represented me (and WON!) in the disgraceful Democrat Documents Hoax, as well as MANY other major, high profile cases," Trump said of Halligan.
"She is extremely intelligent, fearless and, working with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, has the strength and determination to be absolutely OUTSTANDING in this new and very important role," he added. "Congratulations, Lindsey -- You will do GREAT things for JUSTICE, Virginia, and our Country!"
