DOJ seeks 30-year sentence for man who tried to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh
Earlier this year, Nicholas John Roske pleaded guilty to charges stemming from his attempted assassination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
In response, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is asking that the would-be Supreme Court assassin be given a prison sentence of at least 30 years.
DOJ: Roske tried "to alter an entire branch of the United States government"
According to The Hill, that request was put forward in a filing which the DOJ submitted to U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman this past Friday.
"The defendant sought single-handedly and irrevocably to alter an entire branch of the United States government through violence," it read.
"Roske presented a very real threat to life to an individual and their family members — a threat that showed up at their home in the middle of the night," the filing continued.
"No judicial or court official, or their family, should have to live under the fear and mental toll that they could, on any day, at any time of day or night, be gunned down based on a judicial decision," it went on to add.
Roske was angered by abortion ruling
Although prosecutors acknowledged that Roske has received treatment for mental illness, they asserted that this fact "does not excuse, nor did it cause" his attempt to murder Kavanaugh.
Fox News reported that Roske was arrested outside of Kavanaugh's Maryland home in 2022 just weeks after a leak revealed that the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade.
The California resident was found to be in possession of various weapons, including a firearm, a knife, pepper spray, and zip ties.
Roske subsequently told investigators he wanted "to give his life purpose" and was upset that the Supreme Court no longer recognized abortion as a constitutional right.
Roske now identifies as transgender
Meanwhile, the Daily Wire also reported on Friday that a filing from Roske's defense team revealed that he now goes by "Sophie Roske" and identifies as transgender.
NEW: The man who attempted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh identifies as a transgender woman and was deeply mentally ill and suicidal, according to documents first obtained by @realDailyWire.

"The case is captioned as United States v. Nicholas John Roske. That name remains Ms. Roske’s legal name, and she has not asked to recaption the case," the filing read.
"Out of respect for Ms. Roske, the balance of this pleading and counsel’s in-court argument will refer to her as Sophie and use female pronouns," it went on to add.
