Man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump declines to take witness stand
Just over one year has passed since President Donald Trump's golf outing was interrupted by his second assassination attempt.
It was revealed this week that the man who prosecutors say tried to shoot Trump won't be testifying in court.
Ryan Routh opted to represent himself after firing public defenders
According to NewsNation, Ryan Routh told U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday that he would not take the stand before resting his case.
Routh, who is accused of opening fire with a rifle at Trump's West Palm Beach country club on September 15, 2024 is acting as his own attorney.
NewsNation noted how Routh made that decision in July after complaining that his court-appointed public defenders would not listen to him and regarded their client as a threat.
"How are they supposed to represent me and say I’m not a dangerous person when they don’t believe that?" the network quoted Routh as asking Cannon during a hearing.
Firearms expert testified that Routh had a clear view from his hiding spot
NewsNation explained that prior to resting his case, Routh posed questions to Michael McClay, who is an expert witness relating to firearms.
Clay testified that Routh would have enjoyed a clear view of the country club's sixth green from the vantage point he had allegedly adopted.
The firearms expert also indicated that he had personally tested the weapon which prosecutors contend that Routh opened fire with.
Clay stated that while he attempted to fire two shots from the firearm, it jammed on the second shot, leading to the suggestion that Routh would not have been able to discharge multiple rounds.
What's more, Clay also testified that the rifle scope which was recovered at the scene had been affixed using tape and glue, thus compromising its effectiveness.
Routh was previously caught with an automatic weapon and an explosive device
Routh has pleaded not guilty to charges that he attempted to assassinate a presidential candidate, assaulted a federal law enforcement officer, and committed multiple firearms offenses.
NewsNation pointed out that Routh has similarly pleaded not guilty to charges of terrorism and attempted murder which have been brought by the state of Florida.
The network recalled how in 2002, Routh was arrested in North Carolina after he was found to be in possession of an automatic weapon as well as an explosive device. He was hit with additional charges in 2010 when a search of Routh's warehouse uncovered over 100 stolen items.
