BLM leader sentenced to 19 months on fraud charges
Black Lives Matter probably started as a movement worth fighting for for some people, but it eventually turned into a corrupt, tainted organization rife with fraud and bad actors.
According to the Daily Mail, one of the organization's founders, a proven fraudster who scammed so many people out of so much money, was sentenced in court this week -- and many aren't happy about it given that it shouldn't have been a harsher punishment.
Monica Cannon-Grant and her fraud partner-in-crime, Clark Grant, were charged in 2022 on "27 counts of 18 fraud-related crimes connected with her nonprofit."
Cannon-Grant was able to have nine charges related to mortgage fraud dropped after she agreed to a plea deal.
What's going on?
On Monday, Cannon-Grant pleaded guilty to a total of 18 counts of fraud connected to her organization, which included "conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud, and tax violations."
Her husband, Grant, perished in a motorcycle accident in 2023 in Easton, Massachusetts.
The Daily Mail noted:
The couple operated the nonprofit Violence in Boston Inc. in 2017 with the stated purpose of 'improving the quality of life and outcomes of individuals from disenfranchised communities.'
The nonprofit raised over $1 million and received nearly $60,000 in pandemic relief funds to provide meals for underprivileged people, according to the Boston Globe.
The fraud started not long after that, with court records showing that the couple had spent money from the funds on everything but underprivileged people, which included "Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., vacations, trips to a nail salon, a car and even rent on the family's apartment."
They were also accused of hiding income to acquire additional rental assistance funds.
Cannon-Grant was sentenced to the bare minimum punishment this week in court, receiving an 18-month sentence for her crimes.
