President Donald Trump and his administration just slashed nearly $8 billion in federal funding that had been given to green projects.

The Hill reports that White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought announced the cuts last week.

This comes amid the government shutdown.

"Green New Scam" funding slashed

Vought announced the move via his social media account last Wednesday.

He wrote:

Nearly $8 billion in Green New Scam funding to fuel the Left's climate agenda is being cancelled. More info to come from @ENERGY. The projects are in the following states: CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, MD, MA, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OR, VT, WA

More information about the cuts has been provided by the Associated Press.

Per the outlet:

The Energy Department said in a statement Thursday that 223 projects were terminated after a review determined they did not adequately advance the nation’s energy needs or were not economically viable. Officials did not provide details about which projects are being cut, but said funding came from the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and other DOE bureaus.

What exactly the cuts will impact is unclear. The outlet claims, "The cuts are likely to affect battery plants, hydrogen technology projects, upgrades to the electric grid and carbon-capture efforts, among many others, according to the environmental nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council." Whether this is actually the case, though, has yet to be confirmed.

Background

As mentioned at the outset, this is all taking place amid the government shutdown.

The Hill puts the above cuts into context.

The outlet writes:

President Trump said he would meet Thursday with Office and Management Budget Director Russell Vought for what he called an “unprecedented opportunity” to consider recommendations for cuts and firings across federal agencies. Trump said the meeting would be “to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.”

The Hill goes on to report Trump as saying, "I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity. They are not stupid people, so maybe this is their way of wanting to, quietly and quickly, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

It is unsurprisingly that green projects are some of the first to go, considering Trump's insistence that such programs are a "scam."
