Republicans may be about to get a massive win from the U.S. Supreme Court. 

Politico reports that there is a case before the justices that could end up giving Republicans 19 more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This, of course, would be a huge win, especially if you take into account the fact that Republicans currently only have a slim majority in the lower chamber.

The details

The case, according to Politico, has to do with the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

Per the outlet:

Ahead of the court’s Oct. 15 rehearing of Louisiana v. Callais — a case that has major implications for the VRA — two voting rights groups are sounding the alarm, warning that eliminating Section 2, a provision that prohibits racial gerrymandering when it dilutes minority voting power, would let Republicans redraw up to 19 House seats to favor the party and crush minority representation in Congress.

If this were all to come to pass, then Politico notes that it would "all but guarantee Republican control of Congress." It is unclear, however, just how accurate this 19-seat calculation is.

Politico also notes that "a ruling in time for next year’s midterms is unlikely." Although, the outlet also claimed that "it's not out of the question."

We're just going to have to wait and see what the high court does.

Background

We are seeing big redistricting fights in various parts of the country. The Republicans have already managed to make a couple of gains.

Last month, for example, the Missouri legislature redrew its congressional maps in such a way as to net a seat for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Republicans have also had success in Texas, where they are expected to gain about 5 seats in the House thanks to newly-drawn maps.

Democrats, though, are doing their best to counter, in such states as California and Illinois, among others.
