Over the course of six decades, Diane Keaton brought entertainment to audiences through her work as an actress, director, and film producer.

However, fans of the Hollywood star were heartbroken this past weekend to learn that she had died at the age of 79.

First responders took Keaton to hospital on Saturday morning

According to People magazine, a spokesperson for Keaton's family confirmed that she passed away on Saturday in a statement provided to the publication.

"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) told People that its personnel responded to Keaton's home at 8:08 a.m. on Saturday and transported her to a local hospital.

Keaton said her mother "probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind"

People recalled how Keaton was born as Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, the daughter of a civil engineer and a stay-at-home mother.

Keaton spoke of her mother's unfulfilled aspirations during a 2004 interview with People, saying, "Secretly in her heart of hearts she probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind. "She sang. She played the piano. She was beautiful. She was my advocate."

After performing in high school plays and studying drama at college, Keaton moved to New York before being cast in a Broadway production of "Hair" as Sheila's understudy.

The following year, Keaton starred in Woody Allen's Broadway show "Play It Again, Sam" and received a Tony Award nomination.

"The Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola gave Keaton her breakthrough role

People noted that her first major film role was that of Kay Adams, acting alongside Al Pacino in Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 classic "The Godfather."

"I think the kindest thing that someone's ever done for me ... is that I got cast to be in The Godfather and I didn't even read it," Keaton explained in 2022.

"I didn't know a single thing," she continued before adding, "I just was going around auditioning. I think that was amazing for me. And then I had to kind of read the book."

In addition to reprising her character in both of "The Godfather" sequels, Keaton also starred in such films as "Father of the Bride," "Baby Boom," and "Something’s Gotta Give."
