Five U.S. airports are refusing to play a public service announcement (PSA) video in which DHS Secretary Kristi Noem blames Democrats for the current government shutdown because of its "political" content.

Oregon’s Portland International Airport, Washington’s Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and three airports in New York — Niagara Falls International Airport, Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Westchester County Airport--are refusing to play the video and have called it "inappropriate."

“It is TSA’s top priority to make sure that you have the most pleasant and efficient airport experience as possible while we keep you safe. However, Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government,” Noem said in the video that was intended to play at all TSA checkpoints in the U.S.

“And because of this, many of our operations are impacted and most of our TSA employees are working without pay,” the DHS secretary added.

The hope

“We will continue to do all that we can to avoid delays that will impact your travel,” Noem continued. “And our hope is that Democrats will soon recognize the importance of opening the government.”

Democrats are trying to blame Republicans for the shutdown that began on October 1, but Republicans passed a bill with no changes to the scheduled spending, which was then blocked by Democrats in the Senate.

The five airports are now involved in the back and forth, with some even accusing Noem of violating the Hatch Act by bringing up politics in her message.

“We didn’t consent to playing it, as we believe the Hatch Act clearly prohibits using public assets for political purposes and messaging,” a Portland Airport official told a local ABC News affiliate.

"Unnecessarily alarmist"

Other airports just thought the video was too inflammatory.

“The PSA politicizes the impacts of a federal government shutdown on TSA Operations, and the County finds the tone to be unnecessarily alarmist — particularly as it relates to operations at Westchester County Airport,” Jenkins, a Democrat, said in a statement. “This video will not be displayed at Westchester County Airport.”

The message from Seattle alluded to the fact that TSA employees may be struggling as they continue to work even though they are not getting paid until the shutdown ends.

“The Port of Seattle will not play the video on its screens at SEA airport, due to the political nature of the content,” a spokesperson told the Seattle Times, adding, “We continue to urge bipartisan efforts to end the government shutdown and are working to find ways to support federal employees working without pay at SEA during the shutdown.”

It's probably not a great time to be flying in the U.S., since air traffic controllers aren't getting paid either.

During a previous shutdown, air traffic controllers staging a sickout put enough pressure on the government to end the it, but both sides seem pretty dug in at this point.
