Dems shoot down Republican plan to ensure that U.S. troops get their paychecks
President Donald Trump is working overtime to ensure that U.S. troops get paid during the ongoing government shutdown, but Democrats are making it quite difficult for Republicans to make that happen.
According to Fox News, a plan presented by Senate Republicans would have reignited talks to get the government back up and running was shot down by Senate Democrats this week, confusing U.S. servicemembers as to whether or not they'll receive their next paychecks.
The news of the plan that would have ensured U.S. troops get paid getting shot down happened as the shutdown entered day 16 and beyond, with no real hope in sight.
Only a handful of Senate Democrats put their partisanship aside and crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans on the measure.
What's going on?
According to the report, the annual defense appropriations bill was blocked mostly among party lines, as only three Democrats voted with Republicans on the measure.
Fox News reported:
The only Senate Democrats to cross the aisle were Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H. Lawmakers are now headed home after a short week in Washington, D.C.
"I think the people in our military deserve to get paid," Fetterman said, when asked why he joined Republicans on the measure. "That's what my vote is about."
President Donald Trump, using his executive powers, was able to find funding for troops so they were able to get paid on Oct. 15. However, that funding source will eventually run out.
Fox News added:
Had the bill advanced through its first procedural hurdle, lawmakers could have modified it to include other funding bills, a move that Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., signaled he planned to make throughout the week.
Schumer made clear that Republicans wouldn't have the unanimous consent needed to add anything to the appropriations bill.
Dems shoot it down
Other top Senate Democrats revealed why they voted no on the bill, including Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ).
"I just voted no. First of all, it's not a good bill. This is not the way we normally do this. We would normally have an agreement on a process to vote on appropriations bills, not bill," Kelly said.
Kelly added, ."I think if there was a negotiation and a process, we could do something in a bipartisan way."
It'll be interesting to see if Republicans find a way to get Democrats on board with helping to get our troops paid.
