According to the Daily Mail, sources reported that Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales (R) had an affair with one of his staffers before she ultimately set herself on fire in her home and later died.

Regina Aviles, 35, reportedly doused herself in gasoline in her Uvalde, Texas, home in September, quickly becoming engulfed in flames and succumbing to her burn injuries that day.

Aviles was reportedly separated from her husband at the time and served as the congressman's regional district director in Uvalde since 2021.

The sources quoted by the Daily Mail claim that Aviles became romantically involved with Gonzales shortly after she joined his staff in November of 2021.

What's going on?

The Daily Mail reported that a spokesperson for Gonzales refused to deny the alleged affair after having many chances to do so.

It was also reported that their alleged relationship continued "for some time" and that her separated husband was aware of the relationship at the time of her death.

The outlet noted:

Gonzales, 43, a Republican, represents a vast district that stretches from San Antonio through Uvalde to El Paso – covering some of the most volatile stretches of the US-Mexico border.

Aviles was frequently seen by his side, including during Elon Musk's high-profile tour of the border in September 2023. At the time, Eagle Pass was considered the epicenter of the border crisis.

Police investigating the incident said that no foul play was suspected in her death.

More to the story?

The situation, tragic and bizarre, prompted many to call for a deeper investigation, as many believe there's more to the story than what the public is being told.

"We need to call for a full investigation into Rep. Tony Gonzales following reports of an alleged affair with his senior aide, Regina Santos-Aviles, who died after reportedly setting herself on fire in her Uvalde backyard. According to The Daily Mail, her mother discovered her while she was still burning; she was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive," one X user wrote.

They added, "Uvalde Police have been accused of withholding the 911 call, video, and related records from public release. Authorities stated no foul play is suspected. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the incident, during which Regina’s final words were, 'I don’t want to die.'"

Social media weighs in

Users across social media had plenty of different thoughts on the situation.

"Where was the so-called love of her life when she did this to herself?" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Has anyone done a FOIA request yet?"

It'll be fascinating to see where the investigation goes.
