A legendary TV broadcaster who previously battled and overcame cancer is once again facing a possibly life-threatening health crisis.

Former "Today" co-host Bryant Gumbel was reportedly hospitalized Monday evening after suffering an unspecified "medical emergency," according to the New York Post.

Former "Real Sports" host Gumbel, who defeated lung cancer around 15 years ago, lost his equally famous older brother, renowned sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel, to pancreatic cancer last year.

Rushed to a hospital

TMZ was the first to report on Tuesday that Gumbel, 77, was rushed to a hospital in New York City on Monday night after experiencing an undisclosed "medical emergency" at his Manhattan apartment.

Sources indicated that Gumbel was loaded into an ambulance on a gurney and, as of Tuesday afternoon, was hospitalized and receiving treatment.

A representative for Gumbel didn't respond to a request for comment, and an unidentified family member would only say that the well-known TV man was "okay" without providing any additional details about his health status.

Previously battled lung cancer

According to the Post, Gumbel gained fame as a long-serving co-host of NBC's "Today" show in the mornings, where he starred from 1982 to 1997. He is also well-known for the many years that he hosted "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" on HBO, which ended in 2023.

This isn't Gumbel's first major health scare, either, as he revealed to fans and viewers in 2009 that he'd been diagnosed with and received treatment for lung cancer, which he attributed to his former heavy cigarette smoking habit.

In late 2010, People magazine reported on Gumbel's announcement that he had essentially defeated cancer and been given a "free and clear" prognosis by his doctors.

That recovery came as a result of the surgical removal of a malignant tumor, part of one of his lungs, and "some other goodies" in his chest, which he shared while guest-hosting on "Live with Regis and Kelly."

"I’m still doing well. Doctors tell me I’m free and clear, so I hope for better times," Gumbel, then 62, told People at that time. "I’ve got very little to complain about. I’m doing well."

Older brother died of cancer last year

The Post noted that Bryant Gumbel's hospitalization comes less than a year after his older brother Greg passed away from pancreatic cancer in December 2024.

The elder Gumbel was a well-regarded, longtime sports broadcaster who was a fixture at the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament every year, and even announced two of the NFL's Super Bowls.

Hopefully, the young Gumbel's "medical emergency" that left him hospitalized isn't too serious, and he can recover quickly.
