Biden rings bell to signal completion of radiation therapy for prostate cancer
Earlier this year, it was shockingly revealed that former President Joe Biden had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was receiving treatment to combat the potentially deadly disease.
On Monday, Biden "rang the bell" to signal his completion of a round of radiation therapy to treat the "aggressive" form of cancer, according to Fox News.
The positive news for the ex-president was confirmed by his spokesperson after it was heralded on social media by his daughter, Ashley Biden.
"He rang the bell today"
CBS News reported on Monday that Kelly Scully, a spokeswoman for former President Biden, confirmed that her boss had just completed a several weeks long round of radiation therapy at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
"He rang the bell today," she said of the tradition for cancer patients to not only mark their own progress but also to encourage other patients enduring the pain and stress of various cancer treatments.
It was in May that Biden's office first disclosed that he'd been diagnosed at some earlier point with advanced prostate cancer that had metastacized and spread to his bones -- which prompted legitimate questions about the lack of transparency of the prior Biden White House about the true state of his health.
Biden's team continues to remain rather tight-lipped about his health status, and it is unclear if he will need to undergo any additional rounds of treatment to keep battling the disease.
Cheered on by daughter Ashley
CNN also reported on the confirmation that the 83-year-old former president had completed a round of radiation therapy, though no further details were shared about his future treatment plans.
The good news for Biden was further spread publicly in a pair of Instagram posts by his daughter, Ashley, who proudly declared of her father in one post, "Rung the Bell! Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Penn Medicine. We are so grateful!"
In a follow-up post from the former first daughter that included a photo of herself with her father, former first lady Jill Biden, and two of their grandchildren, she wrote, "Dad has been so damn brave throughout his treatment. Grateful."
Biden optimistic about his prospects for recovery
According to CNN, Biden expressed optimism about his situation in a statement he made to the outlet just weeks after his diagnosis was publicly revealed.
"The expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this," he said at that time. "It’s not in any organ, it’s in -- my bones are strong, it hadn’t penetrated. So, I’m feeling good."
In addition to the radiation therapy to treat his prostate cancer, Biden also underwent a relatively minor surgical operation in September to treat symptoms of skin cancer, per CBS.
How quickly Biden is able to recover from the radiation treatment round is of high interest to some, as CNN noted that he is slated to speak on Sunday at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, where he is set to receive a lifetime achievement award, and is also scheduled to address a Democratic Party fundraiser event in Omaha, Nebraska, next month.
