It's not often that we see a high-profile leftist senator praise President Donald Trump and slam his predecessor in the same breath, but that's exactly what happened this week.

According to Fox News, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders heaped praise on President Trump's border and immigration policies during a recent appearance on The Tim Dillon Show.

The Vermont senator not only said Trump's policies are a good thing, but he admitted that the president "did a better job" at securing the borders than former President Joe Biden and his administration.

Sanders made it clear that while he does not like President Trump, securing America's borders is a top priority, saying that "it's not hard to do."

What's going on?

The independent, far left-leaning senator made it clear that America, like any other country, needs secure borders.

"So long as we have nation-states, you’ve got to have borders," Sanders said during the interview. "If you don’t have any borders, then you don’t have a nation."

Sanders added, "Trump did a better job. I don’t like Trump, you know, but we should have a secure border, and it ain’t that hard to do."

Sanders has been an anomaly within the Democratic Party on border enforcement. He has long championed stronger borders than what the Democrats like to see.

Fox News noted:

Sanders, who ran for president twice on a populist economic platform, has previously broken with his party on immigration enforcement, warning during the 2020 campaign about the risks of "open borders" rhetoric. He said the U.S. has the "technology and manpower" to secure the border but that leaders of both parties have failed to do so.

Social media reaction

Users across social media weighed in on Sanders' take on the border security situation.

"'I don’t like Trump but I like what he’s doing.' Democrats would be wise to follow suit with this kind of mentality - practice what you preach," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Well would you look at that, I agree with Bernie on something."

Only time will tell if Sanders receives backlash from expressing his opinion on the matter, not that it would bother him much.
