Redistricting battles are unfolding all across the country, and both sides have claimed their share of victories. Democrats are aggressively pushing the envelope in an attempt to reshape the next election.

However, according to The Hill, despite the call to pursue a redistricting battle in the state of Maryland by the state's Democrats, its top Democratic leader just shut down the idea, citing too great a risk and too many uncertainties.

Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson (D) sent out a "Dear Colleagues" letter to his fellow party leaders this week informing them that he will not get behind a redistricting battle in the state.

The decision will undoubtedly upset the state's Democrats as they desperately attempt to shore up their numbers and make gains in the next election cycle.

What's going on?

In the letter, sent midweek, Ferguson told his colleagues that such a push could result in "catastrophic" consequences for the party, ultimately concluding that the fight isn't worth it at this time.

“Despite deeply shared frustrations about the state of our country, mid-cycle redistricting for Maryland presents a reality where the legal risks are too high, the timeline for action is dangerous, the downside risk to Democrats is catastrophic, and the certainty of our existing map would be undermined,” the letter read, which was originally obtained by Politico.

Not surprisingly, the Maryland Democrat blamed President Donald Trump and Republicans for "pressuring" states like Texas to redraw their maps to gain an advantage in the next election.

“In state after state, leaders are considering redrawing congressional maps in the middle of the decade to disenfranchise minority party voters: not because the census changed – not because population shifted — but because political winds did," Ferguson wrote.

He concluded that such actions have resulted in an "attack" on Democrats.

“The result of this has been an all-out attack on the

Democratic Party and the core of democracy,” he continued.

Ferguson's letter upset many across social media. Users, presumably Democrats who wanted to see the maps redrawn, flooded the comments with profanities and derogatory language directed at the state's Senate president.

"He needs to lose his job then," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "His reasoning against redistricting is weak and pathetic. Worst case scenario is that they end up stuck with the current map."
