Utah prosecutors have charged Tyler James Robinson with a string of felonies in connection with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Yet in a curious twist, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has yet to file any charges of its own against the alleged assassin.

County attorney points to political motive as an aggravating factor

According to the Daily Caller, Robinson stands accused of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.

Daily Caller contributor Hudson Crozier explained that the witness tampering charge is based on Robinson's alleged decision to change clothes and inform his roommate to delete text messages.

Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray maintains that Kirk's murder was politically motivated and thus amounts to an aggravating factor.

Deputy attorney general: "There’s not that many murder charges that are federal"

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated during a September interview with Fox News that the DOJ was still weighing its options.

CNN quoted Blanche as saying that a DOJ indictment would hinge on whether or not this is evidence that federal laws have been broken.

"There’s not that many murder charges that are federal," he pointed out. "There’s stalking, there is certain deprivation of rights charges that we possibly could bring."

"But that goes after going through all the evidence and trying to understand what was this man’s motivation was in doing what he did," Blanche continued.

"And if there’s a federal charge we will bring it – no doubt about it," he stressed before adding, "But if there’s not a federal charge, we’re gonna do everything we can to support Utah and make sure that they get everything they need from us."

Robinson's former roommate and purported lover has kept quiet

In another development, Robinson's former roommate and purported transgender lover has been keeping a low profile since Kirk's assassination.

As the New York Post reported, 22-year-old Lance Twiggs has apparently been avoiding the $1,800-per-month home he shared with Robinson in St. George, Utah.

The Post noted that although authorities previously stated that Twiggs had been cooperating in their investigation, he has not spoken with the media.
